Our Mission
People who are currently receiving buprenorphine or methadone medication for opioid use disorder are needed for a UVM research study examining prolonged exposure therapy for people who have experienced traumatic events!
Trauma exposure is common among people with opioid use disorder (OUD). When PTSD and OUD occur together, people often experience more severe mental health symptoms and worse medication-assisted treatment (MAT) outcomes than when either disorder occurs alone. Fortunately, prolonged exposure therapy (PET) is an efficacious manualized cognitive-behavioral treatment for reducing trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.
This new UVM study will produce important new scientific and clinical information related to how MAT and PET promote reductions in PTSD symptomatology and the efficacy of treating these co-occurring disorders using telemedicine-delivered prolonged exposure.
Furthermore, this project holds significant potential for improving functioning, quality of life, and psychiatric distress for people with PTSD and OUD, as well as public health more generally.
